What is it
This tool will help you prepare for a data and privacy oriented workshop by looking at your business through the lens of personal information. Whether you are a BtoC, BtoBtoC or BtoB business, you deal with data and you deal with people. The know your business template will help you analyse your business with this perspective in mind to prepare for a co-creation session.
If you're running a workshop with external participants, this will serve as a supporting document when pitching your business to newcomers. Keep each answer short and straightforward as you'll only have a brief amount of time to pitch your business during the workshop.
How to do it
1 Gather your team and reflect on what to solve for
Download the template at the bottom of this page and familiarise yourself with the sections to be filled in: what you do and what to solve for.
To complete this template, seek out collaborators representing key aspects of your business such as the CTO or an engineer, a designer and a legal expert. Try to start filling in the document ahead of time to the best of your knowledge and ask them to review it and add to it. If getting them to sit in a room together is not possible, share this document into an online editor so that you can collaborate on it ahead of the workshop. It should only take a few minutes for each of them.
2 Fill in the template ahead of the workshop
Fill in the document in order. Answering all of the question will help key problematics and areas needing improvement to emerge. When you get to the “what to solve” section, pay specific attention to your language so that the question is clear and straightforward as it will shape your challenge for the upcoming workshop. You should have a few options to work from to generate debate within the teams on the day, but not too many or participants will get lost. Our target number is usually three questions.
3 Stay focused on what matters by using this document in various activities
Save this document for the day of the Jam. Together with the data use briefs and personas, this document will be helpful when defining a challenge during the workshop, display all of these assets on each table as go-to documents for the teams. If you have external participants joining you for the workshop, use this document to run a pitch your business session.
