What is it

Get participants to put themselves in the users' shoes, in order to better understand their needs and attitudes when it comes to personal data and privacy.

You can use your personas to run the Understand people discovery exercise and throughout the workshop, to define a challenge and design with people in mind.

Building data-specific and privacy related personas will help participants to put themselves in the user's shoes. By getting a better understanding of their needs and attitudes when it comes to personal information and privacy, they will be able to better prioritise solutions and align on the most appropriate way to solve the challenge while considering the product's specific audience.

How to do it

1 Gather existing user profiles or sets of personas

Start by gathering existing user profiles, personas or data giving an overview of your audience. If you don't have any of that, we suggest you use some of our existing sets of personas.

2 Build data & privacy specific Personas

Download our BtoC persona templates or BtoB persona templates (which includes BtoBtoC personas) at the bottom of this page depending on what is relevant to your company.

Using your existing personas or user profiles, pick one typical profile and one extreme profile and use the template to ask yourself how they would approach data use and privacy. Try doing this with your team and debate what would go through the mind of that persona. Then fill in the templates and change the picture if necessary.

Try to keep in mind that personas should be as inclusive as possible and represent the diversity of an audience and the various ways in which a product can be used.

3 When co-creating, make personas for team assets

Designing with one extreme and one typical user in mind allows us to design solutions that are not made for ourselves, but for people. Make them a go-to asset during the workshop. At Design Jams, we rely on them to run a discovery exercise called understand people, as well as to define a challenge and design with users in mind throughout the day.
