Build a challenge statement

To engage teams in a Jam, concise, focused and inspiring challenge briefs are essential. Use this tool to help your organisation's or business's stakeholders to articulate the role of data in delivering their value proposition and the problems they are facing.
How to do it
1 Meet with the key stakeholders
Set up a working session with the person whose organisational or business problem the Jam will help to solve. Download and bring a copy of the Design a challenge ↓ template to this meeting. You may also bring the Challenge examples ↓ for inspiration.
2 Draft the brief
Go through the template together. As you fill it out, explain why each element is necessary by going through the prompts included. In case certain information is missing at the end of your meeting, ask the stakeholder to work on it and to come back to you with an updated version.
3 Use the assets at your disposal
- Part of building the challenge statement is to go fish for inspiration at the _wall of the day: pick some “How Might We's_” that you find inspiring then choose three with your team that will set the tone of how you will approach the challenge.
- Use the know your business template (fill it in before hand) and/or the _data design brief to build a challenge in line with product needs. Take advantage of the personas at your disposal or the personas you've prepared yourself_ to define your focus.
4 Assess and finalise
Evaluate the challenge brief and rewrite it as needed by considering the following questions:
- Is it short and focused?
- Is it compelling? Will it motivate the teams to work hard?
Is the description of the intended user of the service fleshed out? Are the included technical details necessary, complete and understandable?
5 Introduce the challenge
Share the finalised challenge briefs with the facilitators who will be conducting the team kickoff.
