What is it

Designing for a dummy service is a useful way to consider trust, transparency and control challenges from a new point of view. It is particularly useful if you don't have your own product to work with or your participants are joining from different organisations. Starting afresh with a new service ensures all participants approach the problem free from preconceptions – creating a space for ideas to flourish.

The library of assets for business template services include Sketch assets for a range of different businesses – from messaging and image sharing to financial services and e-commerce. Building on these assets will help to take your sketches to the next level of fidelity and sweat the details of bringing an idea to life on screen.

All of our dummy services focus on mobile interfaces. Designing mobile first is a common industry practice and helps participants to recognise and work within the constraints of a small screen.

How to do it

1 Select services

You should select one or more services from the library which your Jam participants will work on. Reading the data usage scenarios for each service should help you select an interesting problem and should inform your challenge brief.

Multiple teams may work on ideas for the same service or you can assign a different service to each depending on your preference.

2 Prepare the work space

Download the library of dummy services and share the Sketch assets with your designers ahead of time.
Download the data usage briefs and print copies of your selected service(s) for each team.

3 Introduce the exercise

Introduce the idea of designing for dummy services and cover the following:

Introduce the selected service(s) and the related data usage brief.
Advise teams to familiarise themselves with the data usage brief.

4 Identify opportunities

Ask participants to identify opportunities to improve trust, transparency and control for their service. You may wish to use the How Might We approach described here.

5 Sketch ideas

Ask participants to build on the identified opportunities by sketching solutions. Refer to Set brainstorming rules and Sketch your ideas for more detailed advice.

6 Build digital prototypes

When your participants have sketched a solution they are happy with ask them to turn it into a digital prototype using the Sketch assets provided in the library of dummy services. More advice on building digital prototypes can be
